A Lasting Impact

Kathy and Thomas Chou’s connection to Baylor University did not begin in a classroom – it began at a kitchen table.
As their son Derek considered where to attend college, the Chou family gathered around as he narrowed down his options. In a moment that felt both simple and significant, he chose Baylor.
For Kathy and Thomas, that decision became the start of something much larger than a college experience, it became a lasting relationship with the Hankamer School of Business and a shared commitment to helping future students find their own path.
“We were thrilled when Derek chose Baylor,” Kathy said. “The Business School stood out not only for its strong academics, but for its Christian values, vibrant campus culture and nationally recognized athletics programs – something that aligned closely with Derek’s interests.”
That passion led him to pursue Baylor’s Sports Sponsorship and Sales (S3) program, now known as the Center for Sales Strategy in Sports and Entertainment (S3E), where he gained hands-on experience and developed skills that would carry into his career.
As Derek’s Baylor journey unfolded, Kathy found herself drawn in as well. What began as a parent’s support evolved into a deeper engagement for the Chou family. Kathy was invited to speak to Business students, joined the Hankamer School of Business Dean’s Advisory Board, and spent several years building relationships with faculty, leadership and fellow supporters.
Through that involvement, Kathy gained a firsthand understanding of Baylor’s mission and the kind of students it was shaping.
“I felt so welcomed by Baylor,” Kathy said. “The people were so respectful, and the focus on values really stood out. It’s not just about business – it’s about developing people who will go out and do good in the world.”
Inspired by Derek’s experience in the S3 program, Kathy and Thomas established The Chou Family Scholarship Fund in Sports Sponsorship and Sales, which supports students pursuing careers in the sports industry. Each year, four students receive the scholarship, expanding access to opportunities that might otherwise be out of reach.
For Lauren Valley, BBA ’26, a recent recipient, that impact was both immediate and lasting. She credits the scholarship with allowing her to fully invest in her academic and professional growth during her time at Baylor.
“The scholarship significantly impacted my college experience by alleviating financial stress and allowing me to focus wholeheartedly on my academic and professional development,” Valley said. “It enabled me to pursue opportunities that shaped my career path, from competing in the National Collegiate Sports Sales Championship to serving as president of the S3E Club and interning with S3E.”
Those experiences, she said, proved to be transformative both professionally and personally.
“They taught me adaptability, servant leadership and confidence as a woman entering the sports industry while deepening my faith,” she said. “They prepared me for my current role as an inside sales representative with the Washington Commanders.”
Valley said she remains deeply grateful for the Chou family’s investment in her future and the opportunities it made possible.
Her experience reflects exactly what the Chous hoped to make possible through their gift – opening doors for students to pursue their passions and gain meaningful, hands-on experience.
“I hope it allows students to pursue something they might not have thought was possible,” Kathy said. “You never know who has the potential to succeed, but not everyone has the same access. If this helps even one student achieve their dream, that means everything.”
Their belief in the power of sports also played a key role in shaping the gift. To them, sports are more than competition – they are a unifying force.
“It brings people together,” Kathy said. “It doesn’t matter where you come from – when you’re cheering for the same team, there’s a shared sense of pride and connection.”
At the same time, they recognize the evolving complexity of the sports industry. From data analytics and emerging technologies to ethical challenges and shifting business models, today’s sports landscape requires thoughtful, principled leaders. The Chous see Baylor’s values-based education as uniquely positioned to prepare students for that responsibility.
For Kathy, that foundation starts with two simple principles: do what you say you’re going to do and treat people the way you want to be treated.
“There’s a need for people who will lead with integrity,” she said. “That’s what Baylor develops – not just skilled professionals, but good people.”
Their generosity is also deeply personal. As parents, they witnessed firsthand the pride and lasting impact of a Baylor education. Even years after graduation, Derek remains closely connected to the University – a reflection of the experience he had as a student.
“Baylor impacted my son,” Kathy said. “Through him, it impacted me.”
